Symposium Lecture Series
Colins Learning Center Room 316, Fridays at noon
|
The Friday Symposium is a weekly, interdisciplinary lecture series on campus
sponsored by the DBU philosophy department. It meets for one hour just about
every Friday at noon in the Learning Center, room 316. You can bring your lunch
and feed both body and mind simultaneously.
The purpose of the Friday Symposium is to stimulate meaningful conversation
about topics of classic and contemporary importance, and to do so from the
vantage point of Christian conviction. The F.S. features DBU faculty and staff,
guest speakers, and students.
Notable presentations this fall will include DBU philosophy major Jeremy
Shepherd on the problem of religious compartmentalization, DBU alumnus Lamar
Stockton on Christian liberal arts education, publisher Tom Spence on the world of
books along with an introduction to Spence Publications, Two DBU alumni will
share about their recent mission experiences in Iraq, and Dr. Robert Webber
formerly of Wheaton College will speak on the subject of worship.
You will also enjoy presentations by DBU faculty as well, including Dr.
Naugle, Dr. Williams, Dr. Webb, Dr. McCollister, Prof. Moore, and Prof. O’Brien.
So, plan on attending as many Symposium sessions this fall as you can! It
is a great opportunity for the entire DBU community to participate in and
contribute to the “Great Conversation!”

stimulating weekend. The keynote speaker is Dr. Linda Zabzebski from the
University of Oklahoma. If you are interested in attending, contact Dr. Naugle for

Books and Coffee night
Friday October 22, 6:00 pm
|
Every fall semester the PCS at DBU enjoys highlighting the role of used
bookstores in the lives of students, the joy of reading, and the importance of
being a part of a learning community through our Books and Coffee night! We will
meet on the DBU parking lot between Mahler and Strickland at 6: 00 pm and head
to the flag ship Half Price Book store on NW Highway, and after a couple of
hours of book browsing, we will move to the nearby Café Brazil for food, drink,
and conversation as we get to know each other better and talk about the books
we bought! All who attend must buy one book! This is a lot of fun! Don’t miss
out!

Worship Formation Program and Fall Retreat
Friday and Saturday November 5 - 6 |
This fall, the DBU Worship Formation Program will continue its work through a
gracious grant from the Calvin College Institute of Christian Worship. We
have received $2500.00 to sponsor an in-depth study of Dr. Robert Webber’s
significant book Ancient-Future Faith (Baker 1999) in a series of evening meetings
during September and November (be watching for specific dates and times). This
study will conclude with an overnight retreat November 5-6 at Mt. Lebanon
Baptist Encampment,
featuring none other than Dr. Robert Webber himself as our keynote speaker
(he will also be speaking in chapel and at the Friday Symposium on Nov. 5). Mark
this weekend on your calendar now. The cost is free!
Also, the DBU Worship Formation Program will be responsible for a couple of
chapel services this fall, including four liturgically oriented Advent Services
in preparation for Christmas. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more
about God and how the church has worshipped historically!

End of Semester Party
Friday December 10
|
Students involved in the PCS at DBU are invited to an end-of-semester Christmas party at the home of Dr. David and Deemie Naugle, 611 W. Camp Wisdom Road
in Duncanville (just about 5 miles from campus). This annual soiree consists
of a Mexican buffet,
singing Christmas carols, and white elephant gifts. Come dashing through the
snow in a one horse open sleigh and join in on the fun as we celebrate the end
of the term and, most importantly, Christ’s birth!
