Students planning to be certified to teach Grades 8-12 will secure a major in either biology, computer science, English, history, mathematics, or natural science. To be eligible for Texas certification, students will also follow the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) standards for Grades 8-12.

Students follow a course of study which includes the following components: (1) General Studies, (2) Professional Responsibility courses, (3) major in either biology, computer science, English, history, mathematics, or natural sciences, and (4) sufficient electives to complete the 126-credit-hour minimum for the bachelor's degree, which includes 42 upper-level semester hours.

I. General Studies Requirements (54-70 semester hours)
II. Professional Responsibility (12 semester hours):
EDUC 1301, 3312, 4021, 4608, and choose one of the following: BIOL 4011, COSC 4011, HIST 4011, ENGL 4011, GSCI 4011, or MATH 4011.
 
III. Interdisciplinary Academic Major (30-58 semester hours)
A major from either biology, computer science, English, history, mathematics, or natural sciences.

  B. Content:
  Biology (Life Science Certification) -- (33-41 semester hours):
   

(B.A.) BIOL 1406, 2405 (S-L), 2406 (S-L), 3103, 3402, 3404,, 3407, 3408, 3409, 4011, plus 4 additional upper-level semester hours of biology electives, CHEM 1401, and 1402

(B.S.) BIOL 1406, 2405 (S-L), 2406 (S-L), 3103, 3402, 3404, 3407, 3408, and 3409

  Computer Science -- (44 semester hours):
    COSC 1405, 1408, 2406, 3301, 3406, 4305, 4402, MATH 2309, 3302; PHYS 1401, 1402, and 3401
  English -- (30-33 semester hours):
   

(B.A.) ENGL 3305 (S-L), ENGL 3301 or 3302;   ENGL 3313 or 3314, ENGL 4301, 4309, 4311, ESLS 4304, READ 3330, 4337, and 4338.

(B.S.) ENGL 2302, ENGL 3305 (S-L), ENGL 3301 or 3302;   ENGL 3313 or 3314, ENGL 4301, 4309, 4311, ESLS 4304, READ 3330, 4337, and 4338.

  History -- (33 semester hours):
    HIST 2301, 2302, 3312, 3313, 4307, 4309 plus 12 additional upper-level semester hours of history electives, ESLS 4304
  Mathematics -- (38 semester hours):
    MATH 1406, 2309, 2407, 3301, 3302, 3305, 3308, 3309, 3310, 4301, 4302 (S-L), and 4303 (S-L)
  Natural Sciences -- (36-45 semester hours):
   

(B.A.) BIOL 1406, 3101, 3402, CHEM 1401, 1402, GEOL 1301, 1401, PHYS 1401 and 1402, plus concentration hours as follows.

(B.S.)BIOL 1406, 3101, 3402, GEOL 1301, 1401, PHYS 1401 and 1402, plus concentration hours as follows.

(BIOL 3409) is not required, but is recommended if pursuing a Biology Concentration)

Minimum GPA Required for Graduation from Dallas Baptist University

DBU requires a minimum institutional cumulative, major, and minor GPA of 2.0.
