The Burg Center will open for guests approximately 45 minutes prior to the beginning of the commencement service. Doors at the south and west entrances will be open for guest arrival. Guests will be directed to seating depending on the entrance location.
Seating is on a first-come/first-served basis. Guests may reserve seats for others not yet present only until 10 minutes prior to the beginning of the commencement service. At that time, DBU hosts will seat arriving guests in all unoccupied seats.
DBU considers the graduation ceremony to be a worship experience in addition to a time for celebration. Balloons, posters/signs, horns, whistles and other noise devices are not permitted in the auditorium for commencement. Cheering and yelling during the reading of the graduates names are not permitted. Those participating in such outbursts may be asked to leave the service. Designated times for expressing proper celebration will be included during the ceremony.
In order for all that attend the commencement service to be able to enjoy the experience, children under the age of five may not attend. Commencement services are typically at least 90 minutes in length. Small children are rarely able to remain quiet for this extended period, and very often are uncomfortable trying to do so. While children do not intend to be disruptive, talking, crying, and similar behaviors are not uncommon for children of this age - yet this is disruptive to others who are attending the services. Should small children be brought to the service and begin crying, parents will be asked to take the child outside of the building. Accommodations for children and their parents are available in the Education Building where remote broadcast of the service may be viewed.
Graduates will exit the Burg Center at the conclusion of the service and make their way to the Mahler Student Center for a reception. Guests are invited to join their graduates at the reception. Graduates will not return to the Burg Center after exiting the building.
To ensure safety for all in attendance, guests are not permitted to stand in the aisles, entrances, exits, and passageways of the Burg Center.
A room will be available for remote broadcast of the commencement service in the Education Building. This room will accommodate children and parents as needed.
The room will be supplied with coloring books and crayons.
Chairs will be placed around the perimeter of the room, with a few tables available for children to use.
Water and cups will be supplied in the room.
Remote broadcast will also be available in Roberts 113 for adult guests unable to be seated in the Burg Center.
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day."
