On our last day in Peru we went to the Hermelinda Carrera Girls Orphanage in Lima, which is run by Catholic nuns. The Lady Patriots were able to play a volleyball and a soccer game with the girls and teach them many American songs and games. We were able to present the orphanage with several bags of sporting equipment, board games, shirts, and jerseys at the conclusion of the day.
After a couple of hours interacting with the girls, we began to say goodbye, which took a little over 20 minutes. The orphans begged us not to go and some even cried. Many DBU girls were touched by how sweet and loving the orphans were and a few shed a tear as well. Some of the orphans gave us parting gifts, including hand written notes (even on our arms and hands).
After the orphanage, we headed to a Chinese restaurant for lunch overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The girls then were given a couple of hours to shower and pack before heading to the Indian Market to do a little shopping.
The girls became educated very quickly with bartering and making deals in the market and were able to purchase many Peruvian souvenirs for their family and friends.
We headed to the airport to check-in and for dinner around dark. We will fly back to Miami through the night and arrive at DFW Airport around 11:00 AM on Friday.
Thank you again for your continued prayers this week. We have had a blast the entire trip, have made lots of memories, and have lots of pictures to share. It has been amazing and such a blessing to watch these young ladies minister to the people of Peru, and I know they have impacted the Kingdom with their work.

Today, the Lady Patriot Volleyball and Soccer Teams were able to sleep in a little later before rising breakfast. We boarded the buses just after 10:00 and headed to the beach. The Soccer Team played the men, who work at the Miraflores Colon Hotel (the hotel we are staying at in Lima), on a small artificial turf six on six field overlooking the Pacific Ocean. From the moment we arrived, the hotel workers begged their boss to allow them time off to play our girls in soccer. Finally after a couple of days of negotiation, the hotel supervisor granted permission for the hotel workers to take time off from work to compete against us (with the provision that he was able to participate). Following the game Sophomore soccer player Jordan Vick gave her testimony to the hotel employees and then Senior Jonathan Galvan worked the employees through the Gospel in Spanish.
The Lady Patriot Volleyball Team was able to conduct skills training with the orphan girls from two of the transitional homes, one from Cuzco and the other from Lima, on a court next to the field. After a few hours playing and lots of sun, we headed down to the ocean. We ate lunch next to water and the ladies were able to play in the water. The beach is not your typical sandy, picturesque waterfront beach. It is very rough and rugged, with lots of rocks, no sand, dark and dirty water, and huge waves and currents. We did not let the girls venture out very far, but they all had a blast. Most got a nice tan and even burned for some.
At the conclusion of our day at the beach, the Volleyball Team went back to rest before their rematch versus the Peruvian National Team and the Soccer Team went to the historical downtown area of Lima and viewed an old Catholic church and the catacombs.
Following dinner back at the Colon Hotel, we all headed to the Bonilla Coliseum for the Peru v. USA/DBU Patriots International Volleyball Match. We were greeted by a soldout hostile and rowdy crowd of over 2,000 fans, including members of the United States military, Peruvian government officials, and over a hundred orphans from the Hermelinda Carrera Orphanage, which we will visit on Thursday morning.
The atmosphere in the coliseum was unlike anything we have ever experienced...something that cannot really be described, yet resembled a chaotic, pandemonium-enhanced circus. The Lady Patriots played very well and much more competitive than the first match in Tarapoto, but came up a little short. The girls all commented that the game was very intense and something they will never forget for the remainder of their lives.
Everyone is looking forward to visiting the girls at the Hermelinda Carrera Orphanage tomorrow and an afternoon of shopping and bartering in the local market.
Honored to serve,
Ryan Erwin Director, DBU Patriot Athletics

Today, Tuesday, March 10, 2009, we started our morning with breakfast before heading out to two of the local teenage single mothers’ homes. A few early risers, including Coach Ray, Coach Callahan, Trainer M.C. Fontenot, student assistant Lauren Moors, and I, took the opportunity to enjoy an early morning run along the seaside shores of the Peruvian Pacific Coast. Even with the heat and humidity, it was refreshing to get in a short run before our day of ministry activity began. Both teams had breakfast together prior to splitting up by sport to visit the girls’ homes. Breakfast is quite tasty…these ladies can put away the food. Their strenuous activity and athleticism make for hungry appetites. The players have been ingenious with their food preparation. I noticed today that some of the girls were making grilled ham and cheese with the rolls on the pannini’ flat iron. Breakfast consists of eggs, toasts, rolls, cheese, fruit, ham, pancakes, and assorted juices. We definitely are getting a nutritious start to our day. This morning, I had the privilege of serving with the Women’s Soccer Team. Traveling with the Soccer girls by bus is a unique experience…I can only imagine what our players’ parents experienced with their daughters on summer vacation. Entertainment is a priority for the Soccer Team-they keep me in stitches, especially Tasha Garr. Arriving at the teenage single mothers’ home, the Team quickly assembled a couple of skits to showcase to the moms (hard to the call these girls moms when they range in age from 11 to 18). As a father of an 11 year old, I cannot bear to think what horrible situations these young girls have encountered…robbed of their purity and their adolescence to become mothers. Babies should not be raising babies, but these girls are overcoming the adversity and striving to learn parenting skills through this government sponsored home. Along with the skits during our morning activity, DBU Senior Jonathan Galvan led in singing (in espanol, of course) with a few worship songs. The teen moms were very responsive and seemed to enjoy the time of singing. In fact, a few of the girls came to the front to sing a couple of songs for us.
Following the singing and skit time, Emily Evans shared her testimony of how God has moved through her life. Emily gave an emotional message, which had many of us fighting back the tears (me included) as she opened her heart to how God has used this disease to stretch her dependence on God and grow her walk with the Lord. She challenged the girls to accept the adversity God allows in our lives to become who He wants us to be and dependent upon Him for our strength in weakness.

On Tuesday, the DBU Lady Patriot Volleyball team left the hotel at 8:00 for the Santa Rita Orphanage Home for single mothers. The team was greeted by 32 single mothers, ranging from the ages of 12 to 18 and 32 children ranging from newborns to three. Most of the mothers at the home were placed there by a judge's order to get them out of their homes, where many were sexually assaulted or raped as children. Once we arrived, the team divided into two groups and one played and held the children. The children were all so beautiful and each just wanted to be held, hugged, and loved. The second group ministered to the mothers, teaching them games, dances, songs and sharing experiences from the US and Peru. Coach Cathy Ray also shared her testimony with the mothers about how God has blessed her with the ability to play volleyball and in turn share Jesus Christ with other, including the DBU players, opponents and abroad.
The team also did volleyball skills training with the mothers in a small park across the street from the orphanage, which included the DBU staff and Peru translators serving as the net.
Continue to pray for all the players as they minister to the children and people of Peru and for continued good health for the remainder of the week. Everyone is in great spirits and we have noticed that there is no complaining at all from the girls, despite the non-customary environment we are all in.
Entire Group
After the morning work in the orphanages, the team met back up for lunch at Prado's Chicken and then the soccer team headed to the soccer field for a contest against the top club team in Lima, which consisted of women players from across the region. The DBU Lady Patriot soccer team has a whole host of fans including children from many of the orphanages in Lima and Cusco. DBU came up a little short in the contest, but was able to take quite a bit from the game, that they will remember for the remainder of the lives and thankfully injury free. After the game, dinner consisted of a local pizzeria in the Arts District of Peru, which was very tasty and the girls really enjoyed. We were able to get back to the hotel relatively early for a little rest, fellowship and Spring Break homework. ***********************************************
Quotes from the Week
"It has been a blessing and truly amazing to watch these young women of Christ love and serve the less fortunate and share their faith. I believe that each one of the girls on the trip have been impacted while in Peru. For most, this was their first mission trip and they were not sure what to expect, but they all have shown the love of Christ through all their actions with the people and children of Peru. They have been able to use their God-given talents to minister and spread the Word to the children at the orphanages. Our student-athletes are definitely living and serving as "Champions for Christ" abroad.”
Ryan Erwin, Director of Athletics
"Our trip to Peru has totally changed my world view. Now I know how much this world truly needs the love of Christ and it has given us joy to share that love not only by our words and actions but also through volleyball. The people are precious, welcoming, and they continually express gratitude and love in return. This trip is once in a lifetime and we thank God for this amazing opportunity."
Lauren Secord, Senior Volleyball Player, Psychology Major from White Oak, Texas
"This Peru trip is my first mission trip outside the U.S. It has been such an amazing and life changing experience. The people here have welcomed us with open arms and loving hearts. The Peruvian people have taught me so much and I am so grateful for the experiences we have shared with them. I hope that when we leave here, the main thing they remember is the Christ we left with them."
Jessica Nix, Senior Volleyball Player, Marketing Major from Midlothian, Texas
"This has been the most eye-opening experience of my life and I feel truly blessed to be able to participate on this mission trip. I feel like even though we are only here a short time, the impact that we can make on someone's life can be forever."
Kasey Willborn, Senior Soccer Player, Senior Psychology major from Midlothian, Texas
"This trip has been so amazing. I have truly gotten to experience the love of God, which surpasses all understanding. Love is not our circumstance and it is unconditional. These people have loved us without knowing us, and have truly shown that with their open arms. I thought I was coming here to impact people, and we have but in return, they have impacted us when I see these people and the way they live and love. My fears pass away because I know it is still possible to love no matter what. This trip which has been my first mission trip has changed my outlook on the way I love others, and I am so blessed by coming.”
Jordan Vick, Sophomore Soccer Player Psychology Major from Kerrville TX

Volleyball
This morning the girls were provided the opportunity to sleep in a little later since they played so late last night and after a long day of travel/promo activities. After breakfast, we visited the local village orphanage in Tarapoto. We were greeted with big smiles, hugs, and kisses from the children. The ladies played volleyball, soccer, and basketball with the orphans. I am not sure who had more fun, your daughters, or the orphans.
Erin Black begged me to bring one little boy, named Moses home with us. Our understanding is that Moses received his namesake, because he was found abandoned in a basket in the street just after birth. When you look into the eyes of orphans, your heart pounds for the love you want to share and at the same time your heart breaks for the loneliness you know these kids feel.
We spent time playing with the children on the makeshift playground. The kids enjoyed swinging as the girls pushed them. The children had to leave to attend school, so we were given a tour of the orphanage. The orphanage is locally funded with some support through Buckner. We left two duffle bags full of shirts, balls, air pumps, soccer jerseys, cds, and games with the orphanage.
Following our morning at the orphanage, some of the ladies took a village tour via the local means of transportation, a motorcycle rickshaw-like carriage. We then made our way up the mountainside to a popular waterfall in the Amazon forest. Just off the side of the road, we parked the vans and hiked up the mountain on a rock-lined staircase and path. Into the jungle, we crossed natural creeks and took in the beauty of God's creation. Finally, we arrived at the majestic waterfall, where the water spilled over the mountain and into a small pool. (Wait until you see the pictures!)
Upon example by DBU Athletic Director Ryan Erwin, all the players jumped off the side of the rocky cliff into the cool waterfall pool. (Yes, I am happy to report no injuries). I told Coach Ray that if she jumped, I would jump...we both did it! Twice! This jungle excursion will surely be one of the players' tourist highlights.
We made it back to the hotel...after lunch Coach Ray had the ladies doing workout jump training. The group is now preparing to leave for our flight back to Lima. We leave at 6:00 pm on the hour-long flight.
Please pray specifically for our flight. We look forward to rejoining the Patriot Women's Soccer Team tonight and tomorrow for ministry at the orphanages. You should be so proud of your daughters...they have huge hearts for ministry and sharing the love of Christ. I am so impressed with their spiritual and personal maturity. Michelle and I can only hope to raise Betsy into a Godly young woman of strong and passionate faith as you have done with your daughters.
For Christ we serve,
J. Blair Blackburn

The DBU Lady Patriots visited the new orphange in Lima on Monday morning. It made for a long day because of the two-hour bus ride to the orphage and then two hours back, but it was well worth it. DBU was the first group from Buckner to visit the home, which has over 700 children housed there. The teams were able to speak to an English class, teach soccer drills, serve the children lunch and play and minister to the children, who were very excited to see the American girls and very open to listen to what the team had to say. Many of the girls commented on how well behaved and well mannered the children were at the orphanage. Many were expecting to be greeted by chaos, once they heard there were 700 children, but were surprised at the organization of the children. As we have be accustomed to, many of the girls wanted to bring a few of the orphans back because of their cute and smiling faces, despite their situations. ****************************************
Sunday, March 8
Today, we started our morning with interviews of the Patriot Soccer and Volleyball Teams at a local television station in Lima. While at the station, our ladies had the opportunity to spend over an hour and a half with teenage girls from the local orphanage. The players enjoyed their time getting to know these lovely young girls. They all had a great time playing volleyball and soccer in the side street by the television station.
After the live broadcast, our entire group went to a local Baptist church. We had a wonderful time of worship with these fellow Peruvian believers. DBU Athletic Director Ryan Erwin, Head Volleyball Coach Cathy Ray, the Lady Patriot Volleyball Team, DBU Executive Vice President Dr. Blair Blackburn, and our two Buckner representatives traveled to Tarapoto, Peru, in the Amazon forest this afternoon. We traveled by plane, landing on a remote airstrip in the middle of a small tropical forest. Looks like we are on the island of Lost with the Oceanic 715 survivors. Tarapoto is referred to as the city of palms.
We were met by the Peru National Police at the airport. The police escort us by motorcade wherever we go, stopping/blocking traffic. We feel safe, but precautions are being taken to ensure our safety. The Peru Government and Welfare Ministry have been very hospitable to our group.
We dropped our bags at the motel in a small rural village. The motel is nice. Air conditioning and hot showers...it is much more than we expected for jungle mission work.
The Peruvian people are in awe of our volleyball players...5'10" to 6'1" height and blonde hair turn heads and create a bustling of excitement among the villagers. We were met with warmth and kindness at the motel. Little girls are asking for autographs and pictures of the Lady Patriots of the USA Team. The Welfare Ministry and Volleyball Federation have heavily promoted our games. All proceeds from game ticket sales go to help fund a much-needed gym at the orphanage in Lima. We have seen fliers and posters in Lima and in Tarapoto along the streets advertising the games. It is PERU vs. USA Patriots.
Just after arriving at the motel, we were wisked off to a major soccer game where two national men's teams were playing. The Peru Junior National Team (15-18) was introduced along with our DBU players at a break in the soccer game. They paraded us around the field with cheers, waves, and even some blown kisses and a few water balloons from the crowd. We were up against stiff competition. Supposedly, we are facing the best team in the nation. The Tarpoto stadium was filled with some 1,200 people watching. Match #1 of the two meetings found the Peru National Team on top of the DBU-USA Patriots. Match #2 is scheduled back in Lima on Wednesday, March 11.
Tomorrow, the Lady Patriot Volleyball Team will visit the Tarapoto orphanage, tour the local area, and spend time at a famous Amazon forest waterfall. We will fly back to Lima at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening.
Today, the Women's Soccer Team worked at Collique Community Center in one of the poorest areas of Lima. The girls were able to do perform a short program for the kids, which included singing and a small skit. Junior Emily Evans gave her testimony to the entire group at the community center during our visit. The Lady Patriot Soccer Team played a fun game of soccer with some of the ladies in the community. Our young ladies were able to show a Christ-Centered competitive spirit to these local women. Our ladies were able to plant seeds of love into these girls’ hearts, creating relationships on and off the field while at the center.
The Lady Patriots, and the Dean of Spiritual Life Jay Harley, were able to present the staff of the Collique Community Center a large bag of soccer balls, volleyballs, and basketballs to help with much needed improvements.
Please continue to pray that God will use our players to reach others for His glory. Be sure to pray for traveling mercies as we travel by bus and plane tomorrow.
**************************************** Saturday, March 7
Greetings from Lima, Peru. The entire group, which consists of 37 representatives from DBU and two from Buckner, has made it to our hotel in Lima after a long day of travel from Dallas with a layover in Miami and then over a five hour flight into Peru. The group encountered its first obstacle today while we were at airline ticketing at DFW Airport. Somehow Jonathan Galvan did not have an airline ticket from Miami to Lima, but had tickets from DFW to Miami and then from Lima to Miami and Miami to Dallas. The airline was able to issue a ticket for an all day flight on Saturday night, but the group prayed that the Lord would provide a way for Jonathan to stay with the group and get on the original flight. Once we landed in Miami, the airline was able to find him a seat on a full flight. We were all thankful and reminded that God is good. We will continue to have obstacles arise this week, but with your prayers and God's help, we know nothing is impossible.
The Lima airport was definitely an experience for the group, especially Customs and Immigration, but we made it through in a little over an hour.
The group is made up of 10 DBU Volleyball players, 18 DBU Soccer players, two coaches, two athletic trainers, two DBU students, and three administrators from the university, as well as the two individuals from Buckner.
Continue to check back for more updates this week. We appreciate all your support both financially and prayerfully and are all looking forward to what God has in store for us and how He will use each one of us to teach the people of Peru about Jesus.
