The Dallas Baptist University Lady Patriot Volleyball Team improved their overall season record to 15-13 on Saturday afternoon as they defeated St. Edward’s University in straight sets. With the win, DBU breaks the Lady Hilltoppers 12 game-winning streak and improves to 7-3 in Heartland Conference play.
The Lady Patriots came out strong to win set one (25-16) and take an early 1-0 lead over the Lady Hilltoppers.
SEU began the second set on fire as they rallied for a lead to put the Lady Patriots against the wall. DBU responded with confident defense led by Seniors Erin Black and Amanda Emmert to work their way back and take the second set 25-22.
Once again the Lady Hilltoppers started early in the third set as they were able to build a significant lead on the Lady Patriots. A defensive spark from Senior Amber Byrd gave DBU what they needed to overcome the deficit as they finished out the heart wrenching third set 25-23 to give them the win. Sophomores Secord and Kaylyn Frink led the Lady Patriots in the win on the offensive side of the ball. Secord posted a game high 15 kills as she hit for an impressive .500 average in the win. Frink posted 14 kills on the day, adding 13 defensive digs to grab her 15th double double of the season as she hit for a .256 average. Senior Lauren Zegarelli also helped lead the Lady Patriots to victory as she put down 10 kills in the win, hitting for a .318 average.
The win marks DBUs fifth straight match victory, with four of those wins coming by way of straight set sweeps.
“I am proud of our team and the way they played today. They have been working extremely hard in practice and it showed today. The team was confident throughout the match, and our senior leadership helped us get over the top to win the match. I am thrilled at what these young women have accomplished this season,” Head Coach Cathy Ray said.
The Lady Patriots are back in action on Tuesday, October 27, as they welcome Southeastern Oklahoma State University to the DBU campus. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Burg Center.
