Nate Frieling is in his seventh year as an assistant with Dallas Baptist Baseball. Frieling's primary duties involve working with the Patriot infielders, coaching third base, and coordinating the DBU recruiting efforts along with overseeing Patriot Baseball Camps. Coach Frieling has been a part of four NCAA Regional Tournaments and one NCAA Super Regional.
In 2009, the Patriots finished the season with a 38-17 record and compiled a .967 fielding percentage - their highest since a team record .972 in 2004, Frieling's first year on the staff. He has also tutored several players in his first six years who have gone on to professional success. Shortstop Ryan Goins was drafted in the 4th Round of the 2009 First Year Player Draft after being named 2009 All-Ping!Baseball Second Team, ACBA Midwest All-Region Second Team, Louisville Slugger All-American Third Team, Pro-Line/NCBWA (National College Baseball Writers Association) All-American Third Team, and Baseball America All-American Third Team, as well as being named All-Independent Player of the Year. Goins joined four other Patriot infielders who have been drafted during Frieling's tenure, including 2009 MLB All-Star Ben Zobrist.
As an assistant in 2008, Frieling saw the Patriots make their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in only their third year of Division I eligibility, finishing the regular season with 37 wins and the 29th best RPI in the nation.
Prior to joining the staff at Dallas Baptist, Frieling spent three years at Baylor University, the last as Director of Baseball Operations. During his tenure at Baylor, the Bears qualified for three NCAA Regional Tournaments and one Super Regional, losing to LSU in three games at the 2003 Baton Rouge Super Regional. Coach Frieling also helped oversee Baylor Baseball Camps. He received his Master of Science Degree in Education from Baylor in 2002.
Coach Frieling graduated from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas in May of 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology. While at Southwestern, he played under legendary Head Coach Jim Mallon, the second all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division III history. During his last year in Georgetown, Frieling had the opportunity to serve under Mallon as a student assistant coach.
During the summer of 2005, Frieling served as the bullpen coach for the United States National Team as Team USA competed against the best professional players from visiting countries. During their stateside tour, held mostly on the east coast, the Americans posted a perfect record and swept both Team Italy and Team Nicaragua.
During the summer of 2004, Coach Frieling was the head coach of the Mineral Wells Steam of the Texas Collegiate League. The Steam are owned by Athletes in Action, the sport ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ.
Coach Frieling is single and resides in Red Oak, Texas. He is active in his home congregation of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Dallas.
